There have plenty of gas conversions in Melbourne for automobiles, but many people are still wondering what these conversions are. They have heard of them in the new, from their friends and know the government gives a refund for the conversion, but don’t quite understand what they are.

WHAT ARE GAS CONVERSIONS?
LPG conversions for vehicles add a fuel tank to the boot of your car and gas lines to the engine. This allows the driver to switch between propane and petrol while driving along. This gives a the driver a lower cost in fuel expense and in certain cases, a boost in engine performance.
Even though it’s possible to put your car onto straight gas, it is not recommended. If you have a problem with the LPG gas or not close enough to an AutoGas station, you won’t have the petrol as a backup fuel source.
LPG for vehicles is called Autogas, which is a blend of gases unlike the propane you would be using for your BBQ. Since Autogas is a blend of propane and butane, your vehicle will not run off of a cylinder off BBQ gas, which is propane only.
Once your vehicle undergoes a LPG conversion, it will begin to save the owner money from the first day. LPG is typically at least fifty percent cheaper than other fuels and those savings can add up quickly. This means you will recover the cost of the conversion pretty quickly..
WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PAYS
With a program known as the LPG Vehicle Scheme, the Government provides a grant to buy a new, private-use vehicle that has been fitted with a LPG system before it is first registered or for LPG fuel conversions of vehicles that already have been registered.

If the brand new auto you buy already has a LPG system installed, you can claim a $2000 refund. This includes vehicles fitted with LPG at the time of manufacture and vehicles fitted with LPG after manufacture, but before first registration.
You can claim a $1000 refund from the government if you convert your existing vehicle to LPG and it is completed between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2014.
